A gallon of regular averaged $3.25 in 2008. The year’s low was $1.69 in December; the high, $4.06 in July.

The same gallon, three ways
Sticker dollars first, since that’s the number people remember. Run through the CPI, 2008’s $3.25 gallon costs $5.05 in August 2026 dollars, against $4.06 at the pump this month. In real terms, gas was pricier then than it is now.
The second correction is wages, which moved too. At 2008’s average hourly pay, earning one gallon took 10.8 minutes of work; today it takes 7.5. Whatever the sticker said, your time bought less gas then.
Stack all 47 years by their real average and 2008 comes 5th. The priciest year on the sign is 2012; the cheapest, 1998. Diesel, for the record: $3.81 that year.
